For too many people, the word government evokes images of bureaucracy, tyranny or corruption. Yet effective and democratic government institutions are essential to free, safe and prosperous societies. Our work in this field supports organizations that seek to make the process of governing more transparent, accountable and responsive.
Our grantees assist in the reform of political systems through work that promotes political equality and citizen participation. We make grants that seek to connect the power of good governance to the issues of international security, conflict prevention and economic development. We support efforts to strengthen peace through multilateralism in foreign policy. And we promote the growth of democratic values and practices in a wide range of global governance bodies.
Our work explores ways to make the process of governing more transparent, accountable and responsive.
Key Strategies
We have three goals for this work:
- Strengthening the institutions and processes of democratic governance, especially their capacity to secure peace and social justice
- Democratizing global governance, especially in the areas of international economics and security
- Rebuilding support for the role of government as an essential component of democratic governance
