Democratization and Economic Reform
In 1989, the foundation's Board of Trustees authorized staff to begin making grants in direct support of institutions in the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary and, subsequently, in Czechoslovakia to advance the process of democratization and economic reform. From 1989 to 1994, the foundation spent about $30 million on these projects.
Our regional office in Moscow opened in January 1996. Since then, the foundation has spent nearly $140 million supporting a range of projects promoting diversity and tolerance, supporting journalistic excellence and cultural richness, and helping build a strong civil society, all in the Russian Federation. In 2008, we provided more than $10.7 million in grant support in Russia.
Winding Down Our Work
The foundation has concluded, with great regret, that in response to the serious economic downturn it is necessary that we wind down our operations in Moscow by the end of September 2009.
We are enormously proud of the efforts of our staff and grantees in Russia over the last 13 years. They have done courageous work in key areas. The office has supported initiatives to strengthen academic innovation and create strong communities of scholars; helped build civil society organizations; helped create a flourishing contemporary arts movement; and significantly advanced the impact of HIV/AIDS-related programs.
Our support for the International Fellowships Program (IFP) in Russia will continue through 2014. The IFP program offers leaders from marginalized communities the opportunity to undertake graduate studies at universities around the world.
The foundation is very grateful to have had the opportunity to work in Russia and to engage with such a broad array of organizations and individuals. We are heartened and encouraged by the ongoing work of these partners, who are working tirelessly to build a strong, inclusive and sustainable future for Russia.
